Mission Statement
The mission of the Aggie Rodeo Association is to allow students who are involved in the sport of rodeo to continue pursuit of their rodeo goals while achieving sound academic goals. In supporting these students NMSU is able to retain students and provide them with leadership and teamwork skills. In achieving their educational and rodeo goals the students will bring positive recognition at the community, regional, and national level to themselves and New Mexico State University.
Goals and Strategies
- To encourage rodeo athletes to remain in school and reach graduation. Recruit students who are interested in receiving a college education. Be knowledgeable to give sound academic advice to students. Emphasize the importance of a college education in meetings, day to day counseling, examples and practice. Emphasize the requirements of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association. Provide financial assistance.
- Provide skill development for students involved in rodeo activities. Use stock donated by stock contractors. Use minimal stock charges when a must to get practice stock.
- Bring positive attention to rodeo program to gain support of new students, university and community. Host successful NIRA rodeo both financially and in production. Use all of our physical facilities that enhance NMSU. Have good student athletes competing for NMSU. Provide equal opportunities for students as other colleges and universities for skill development. Have programs that are beneficial for the community.
- To provide programs, services, and activities that enhance students learning, growth and development. Have students plan, coordinate, and produce such programs/events as our NIRA rodeo, special rodeo, clinics, and other events. Use committees assigned to certain events and elements within events. Conduct training sessions for committee chairpersons and other leaders.
With a rich history that spans 80 years, the NMSU Rodeo Association offers students a one-of-a kind college experience. In addition to the outstanding courses provided by each of our academic colleges, we offer the opportunity to be a part of a championship rodeo team. With more than 30 national champions and 70 regional champions, you are sure to find yourself in the winner’s circle!
As a member of our team, you will enhance your leadership and teamwork skills in the classroom and the arena as well as connect with other students from all around the continent with varied experiences and interests. You can become a key member of our family – perfecting your craft, confidence and mindset both inside and outside the arena!
Our facilities and equipment include:
- 60-foot-wide calf lane with 50 fresh calves each semester
- Tuf-Kaf for fundamental and horsemanship practices
- Team roping with 30 fresh steers each semester
- Team roping dummies for fundamental and horsemanship practices
- Horse saver dismount dummy for goat tying practices
- Horse saver and slide dummy for steer wrestling practices
- Dedicated barrel patch for slow work
- 150-by-150-foot rough stock arena
- Top-quality practice stock traded out as much as desired
- Link Weaver Bucking machine for fundamental practices
- Stalls and trailer parking are available on practice facility grounds so there is no need to haul to practices or find horse property for rent. Stalls are available to NMSU Rodeo team members for $35 per month. Our facilities offer as many sandy desert washes as needed to keep your equine athletes in shape.
